Kentucky Principals Academy: KVEC Cadre

The Kentucky Principals Academy: KVEC Cadre was established in conjuncture with the University of Louisville's Kentucky Principals Academy. The first cohort met in June of 2010 at the Hampton Inn in Pikeville, KY. 40 participants were treated to presentations by nationally known educational speakers Mike Rutherford and Brenda McClain, as well as KPA Executive Director, Debbie Powers and the KPA staff.

The KPA curriculum was developed by principals for principals. A work team was established to solicit information from experienced, successful principals from around the Commonwealth of Kentucky to design a cohesive, meaningful curriculum for those principals selected to participate in the KPA. The curriculum focused on three essential questions:

Who am I as leader?

What is at the core of the work I am leading?

How do I create an environment in which to move the work forward?

The comprehensive curriculum for the KPA has been crafted into three overlapping modules:

Developing the Leader Within

Teaching and Learning

Collaborative Relationships

Each of the three modules is subdivided into topics and activities so that the KPA cohort may maximize their time through interaction with the Academy presenters and their peers. The experiences and activities of the Academy provide ample opportunities for collaboration among the principals thus allowing them to build a network of support for a job that is too often isolating.

The Academy is designed to allow for maximum engagement of the cohort members through experiential activities, book studies, round table discussion groups, and presentations from University of Louisville faculty, Kentucky superintendents, regional as well as national experts, and successful principals from around the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
